Bengeo
Hertford’s hilltop haven with lively pubs and shops and a village vibe all of its own.
Bengeo is a very desirable town set on a hill overlooking Hertford and surrounded on all sides by beautiful rolling countryside and is reached via a picturesque and winding road called Port Hill that climbs from Hertfords northwest corner up and through the centre of the town and has some fabulous detached period properties lining it on either side.
Off Port Hill to the east takes you to The Warren, an ancient footpath running along the side of the River Beane and the wide open spaces of Hartham Common, which leads up the hill to the Norman church of St. Leonard, the oldest building in the Hertford area, located on the hillside overlooking the shared Beane and Lea valley, the Grade I Listed church dates from about 1120, there are also great views from up here.
Informally the town consists of Upper and Lower Bengeo, the upper part is the area at the top of Port Hill and Bengeo street and the surrounding area and the lower part being the area on the side of the hill made up of streets such as Port Vale and Byde Street.
Upper Bengeo has its own amenities such as a local shop, a Post Office, two warm and friendly pubs both providing local ales and Sunday lunches. There are two primary schools, one being a ‘Good’ state school which is Bengeo Primary School and the other is Duncombe which is an Independent Prep School. There are relaxing walks across Waterford Heath and many bridal and toepath’s that take you across some of the most stunning countryside in the UK.
Bengeo has many local and independently run businesses such as a Bengeo Nursery which stocks plants and shrubs for your garden and local Joiners or R S Castle Joinery who can make you anything from sash windows to handmade staircases!

There is an arts centre called ‘Court Yard Arts’ which showcases the work of local artists and also runs classes for all ages. Across from here is a popular local crafts business called Manic Ceramics, here you can have children’s parties or just pop in to make and paint your own ceramics whatever age you are!
